Did you know?
Steel drums can be used in all genres of music from pan jazz, rock N roll to the classics. Steel drums were the lastest instrument to be invented. The steel drum was invented in Trinidad and Tobago. Steel drums are made from the bottom of a 44 galloon drum. (Why not the top? Because it has hole in it!) Steel drums have become very popular all over the world but remain uncommon in Australia. Are good for the environment as the drums can be recycled. Steel drums are called "pans" in Trinidad.
D' Workshops
The Caribbean Arts and Entertainment Company supplies various steelpans and percussion instruments needed for the workshops.
Workshops are best held inside under cover (or in the shade as sunlight can affect the drums) and away from the others due to the noise. The area needed depends on how many are participating but approx 5m x 5m minimum. Good access to the designated area is desirable as the drums are bulky. The Caribbean Arts and Entertainment Company will set up the equipment which takes approximately an hour. Then its time for the fun to start!
After an short introduction about the history of the steel drum, where Trinidad is on the world map, proper care of the steel drum and how to get the best sound with the sticks the group is divided into steel drum and /or percussion groups. The participants get to choose what particular instrument they wish to play.
Steel drums (pans)
The steel drums are divided into 3 sections, tenors, mid section and bass. The tenors are in the front and take the lead (the melody) and harmony, mid section gives harmonic structure and the back line comprises the bass drums.
Percussion
Percussion instruments include conga drums, djembe's, timbales, triangle, afuches, shakers, cowbells, chimes, shells, clave, cymbals, juioro, tamborine and rhythm sticks to name a few.
If the workshop involves percussion, this group moves to another area to practise. Chairs will be required for this group.
The Finale
If its a "one off" workshop including percussion...... the groups rejoin to give a final performance to parents, teachers, friends and crowds (at a festival.) This is a very rewarding experience especially for those who have never played an instrument in a ensemble giving an immediate sense of satisfaction.
It is a once in a lifetime experience for some. Bring the video and cameras!
With continuous workshops (eg weekly) the band will eventually play to bigger audiences eg. school speach nights and fetes, markets and fundraisers and local events. The steel bands often become a self funded and in demand for local and corporate events like multicultural festivals.
WORKSHOPS are suitable for schools ( Primary and High), festivals, corporate team building sessions, churches, interest groups. Fun seeking groups and individuals!
